Sky Captain and the World of
Tomorrow (2004)
Reviews
I had high hopes for this film. A throwback of the science
fiction films of the 1930's and 40's, it could have been something wonderful.
It was kind of lame. Filmed and then adjusted by computer to look washed
out like an old film, it certainly looks unlike any other film, but it
fails in one very important point. The plot is very weak. I know, it was
supposed to be non-stop action like the serials of old, but it wasn't supposed
to be lame. The acting isn't bad, and the characters are interesting, there's
just something missing.
I'll give you a perfect example. When they finally
get to the main villain's stronghold, their scientist friend, who had been
captured, just shows up at an opportune time and says "we got away, but
some people died". This is almost an exact lift of a line from, of all
things, Thumb Wars. The line in Thumb Wars is "I escaped somehow." The
two scenes are even framed the same way. The special effects are really
cool, but effects do not a movie make.
4 Out of 10 stars.
